i am interested in jewish history. although i am not jewish. i would like to know if the jewish people can trace their lineage back to the original 12 tribes of isreal i.e. gad, dan, levi ...

.Very hard to determine, simply because of the various dispersions. One of the great problems, have to do with, which is why a Jewish male or female is determined by the mother, not the father. You also have the legend of the Khazars. You also have to realize that the only two tribes that remain are Judah, and Benjamin, the other 10 tribes have been lost through the exile after the conquering of Israel, not Judah. Many claims have been made by various groups that they are one of the lost tribes, including the British, but unfortunately those tribes are lost to us forever. |

`no, i am a levite; there was a program on wnet tv and they examined the question and through genetic linking of mitochondrial DNA they could show this; you might try pbs.org website and do a search for the program; there is also a website called kingdaviddynasty.org that can do genetic testing to see if you are genetically descended from king david
